Spring Pest Control in Chicago — What to Watch For This Season

Once nighttime temperatures break 40°F consistently, overwintering pests reactivate. Pavement ants and odorous house ants are usually the first calls in late March. By April, German cockroaches that had slowed in winter resume normal breeding cycles. Wasp queens begin scouting for nest sites in May. Bed bug volume rises steadily through May ahead of summer peak.

Spring rains drive ground-nesting ants inside. Pavement ants follow expansion joints in concrete slabs and emerge through baseboard gaps. Odorous house ants build satellite colonies inside walls.

Spray-on-sight kills the foragers but not the colony. Effective ant control uses non-repellent gel baits the workers carry back to the queen.

German cockroaches don't disappear in winter — they slow down. As spring temperatures rise in heated buildings they resume full activity and become noticeable again. Spring is the best window to knock down populations before peak summer breeding.

Bed bug reproduction speeds up with warmer temperatures. Spring is also the start of moving season — Chicago renters relocate, often moving infested furniture without knowing it. Bed bug call volume climbs steadily April-June before peaking in July-August.

Walk the exterior: seal foundation cracks, replace damaged weatherstripping, ensure dryer vents close properly. Trim shrubs back 12" from the house. Clean out gutters. Check garage door seals. Inspect window screens for tears. Wipe down kitchen surfaces and seal pantry items in airtight containers.

Call early — ant trails, the first cockroach sighting, or any travel-related bed bug suspicion. Preventive spring treatment is far cheaper and easier than reactive summer treatment.
