"How long until I'm bed-bug-free?" is the question we hear most. The honest answer depends on the treatment type and the size of the infestation.
Heat treatment timeline
A heat treatment for a typical Chicago apartment runs 6–8 hours from setup to teardown. You can sleep in the bed the same night. Most heat jobs are one-and-done, with an inspection visit at 2–3 weeks to confirm elimination.
Chemical treatment timeline
On-site time is usually 2–4 hours for a typical apartment. Re-entry is allowed once products dry (about 4 hours). Chemical treatments require 2–3 visits spaced 2–3 weeks apart to catch newly hatched nymphs. The full treatment cycle is usually 4–6 weeks from start to clearance.
Why multiple chemical visits
Bed bug eggs are glued to surfaces and survive most contact and residual products. Eggs hatch in 6–10 days. The second visit kills nymphs that hatched after the first treatment; the third (when needed) is a safety net.
When activity should drop
After a chemical treatment expect to see fewer bugs within the first week and very few by week three. Bite reactions should fade in the same window. After a heat treatment, activity typically ends the day of treatment, though dead bugs may continue to appear for a day or two.
What affects the timeline
Larger infestations take longer to fully clear. Adjoining units with bed bugs (in apartments and condos) can extend treatment because of reinfestation pressure. Poor prep — unbagged clothing, cluttered rooms — also extends timelines.
