What Are Chiggers?

Chiggers are tiny mites that are barely visible to the naked eye. These parasitic pests are common in Chicago's outdoor areas and can cause intense itching and discomfort when they bite humans.

Understanding Chiggers

Life Cycle:
Only the larval stage of chiggers bites humans. These microscopic larvae are typically found in grassy, wooded areas and attach to clothing or skin.

Symptoms:
Chigger bites appear as red, itchy welts that can last for several days. They typically occur around areas where clothing fits tightly.

Prevention Tips

1. Protective Clothing
Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when in areas where chiggers are present. Tuck pants into socks or boots.

2. Insect Repellent
Use EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET on exposed skin and clothing.

3. Immediate Action
Shower immediately after being outdoors and wash clothes in hot water to remove any attached chiggers.
